I wanted to try an environment shot with the wood duck. I liked the reflection and the implied motion of the water.

Always looking for comments and critiques

Andrew:
It is a nice environment and the waves have not disrupted the nice, detailed reflection of the head. For me, the cumulative effect of the waves, the leaves, and especially the bright reflections on the water are distracting. I think I would try selectively reducing the intensity of the bright regions of the water, especially in front of the duck. That could be enough to allow me to enjoy the environment without distracting my attention from the beautiful duck. Another point - the bright region on the bill and the vertical band of white seem overexposed and, consequently, have no detail. The Wood Duck is a tough subject for exposure. Wish I could find some so I could practice getting a good exposure!

Hi Andrew, You've tackled a difficult species to get a good exposure on the bird let alone reflective water. I like the idea of getting more of the environment. I think the greens in the water add a lot to the image. You sharpness on the birds head seem on target. I agree with David on the apparent over exposed areas and would include the bg yellow leaf and tan side feathers too. I also agree that the combination of bright water, ripples and complex coloration of the duck make the overall image a bit chaotic. Don't know what lens you used, but f8 seem a bit high and I'm wondering if a lower f stop might have softened the water and made it less distracting. I too like how the head is so well reflected.
