Photographed on April 25, this kit appears deep in thought but was really just distracted by some sounds in the woods.

Nikon D300 300 f4 + 1.7X TC HH lying down
f/6.7
1/1000s
ISO 500
-.67 EC

Cropped to 75% for compositional purposes, smart sharpened, noise reduction on BG all in CS5 on 27" iMac

Hi Luke: I moved to over to the Wildlife gallery rather than Avian. Nice pensive look from this little one.

Hi Luke,

Gerat side-profile on this one - usually I would have preferred a head-turn but this works well without. Another great addition to a good series!

If I were to really nit-pick, I might say you overdid the NR on the background - it looks a little unnatural.

Still another great shot though! :toast:

Very nice fox image photographer Luke! I see that you have this kit (or his litter mates) elsewhere in your gallery. They are one of my favorite Spring wildlife species. Your dof is spot on- excepting I would prefer all of the rock surface perch in sharp focus. Coloration and lighting is quite flattering to the total composition. Was this a morning or afternoon shot? Just curious.

Hey Luke,

ID problem originally? Thought you were shooting a Fox Sparrow?

Compared to the previous shots this one (when the larger version is viewed) looks a tad sharper to me. And, I do like the intent stare the kit is giving in the direction of that sound. To my eye the fox itself could use a very slight increase in exposure (I probably would bump that on the fox ONLY to help it pop a little more). I'm only talking about 1/3 to 1/2 stop at most. Looks to me like this whole series represented a real DOF and foreground/background clarity vs. distraction challenge and I think you made some good decisions. I know you'll be disappointed if I don't say this: would prefer a little more sharpness in the foreground (so I just said it)!

Cheers Luke - hoping this isn't the end of the series...

Jeff,

This was taken in the afternoon right as the clouds rolled in. Morning photography wasn't an option because the den was at the edge of the woods and the grasslands and aligned perfectly with east/west so in the morning it would not recieve any light until long after the sun had risen.

NIce clean lines in this profile shot and good detail in the fox.. Agree that the BG looks just a touch too smooth.

Luke the colors seem a bit more vibrant in this image than the previous ones I viewed and I think it make s for a more attractive appearance. Another good fox image. :toast:

I agree this one feels more vibrant/crisp than the others. The whole series has been nice. Are you looking at tripods? I'll wager you won't regret the improvement one can provide in some circumstances, translated as higher percentage of keepers. Luke, did you get any with the youngsters interacting with parents? Are you still monitoring the den?

The expression is what I like the most in this very nice picture. Having just experienced the behaviour of the desert foxes around here, also the relaxed pose is quite striking. Thank you for sharing.
