Tapir up close

This was my only close encounter with a Bairds Tapir. At the crack of dawn on my last day at crocovado, this large male ventured out of the dense thicket. It was close to the mouth of the rio sirena. I figured that he was either going to cross the river at its mouth or walk upriver along its bank close to where i was. I sat down near the heaps of driftwood and waited. He then started walking towrads me, pausing a couple of times making funny faces (and funny trunks  ).
He was deceptively quick and i managed only a couple of decent snaps as he rushed past me into the jungle. Under the low light i messed up most of the snaps as my lens refused to focus on that black

A nice clean shot of an elusive animal - especially given the poor lighting. I suppose if I were to really nitpick it is a shame the tapir's trunk just intersects with that fallen branch bit in the bg but that is really really really minor!

Hi Anand,

I'm in full agreement with the previous comments - well done capturing this tough-to-photography animal under challenging conditions. I get the feeling there might be some more detail that can be pulled out on the tapir (through some careful selective image editing) but even exactly as posted this is definitely a unique shot!

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Sounds like very challenging light and conditions but at least you got a clean good shot, I have never heard of a Bairds Tapir. Way to go.

Thanks guys ! I knew this was one of those pics which I like largely due to my memories and might not appeal as much to others. Glad you guys can relate to that. By the way, although endangered and super hard to see in most places, they are fairly common near the Sirena station in corcovado. I was really unlucky not to see them more often. If you get a chance, GO !!! Its great for pumas ! Aside from the airfare its just $4-$10 a night at corcovado !

I really like the surprise of those white tipped ears. This is about as difficult situation for exposure as one can imagine, with the dark background, the dark subject and the one bright log just behind. I think you handled it well, especially given it was a "hurry up" situation. I agree it would be worthwhile to try to process for a bit more detail in the shadows of the subject, but I like this well, as posted.
