Ecuadorian Trogon

by Jim DeWitt

Gallery: AvianPosted March 20, 2011142 views8 comments
Olympus E-5, 300mm, handheld (broken tripod)
f6.3, 1/320, ISO1600

Trogon mesurus. A portrait, because a mass of twigs obscures his tail. Not having a tripod forced me to ISO1600 to freeze the slow head roll Trogons do, so there's noise.

75% of FF. Selective sharpening to head; noise reduction to background.

C & C, please. Thanks for looking.

I'm fine with the level of noise here, Jim: we see beautiful detail and great color. Fine shot. It may be snipped a little low for a portrait; you could consider removing more from the bottom...although it's so nice to see all of that color. :toast:

Nice, Jim. It held up very well for that iso. Good detail.

What a great portrait Jim! I particularly like the great look at the eye. The noise level seems fine. :toast:

What a colorful bird, nice to see this up close to really appreciate the color scheme these birds have. I see a little noise on the larger image but good job in getting this shot at iso 1600, way to go.

I've only managed to get shots of trogons throuugh a mass of branches, but I live in hope. This is a great shot of one of the most beautiful birds in the world. Don't see much noise.

I think this is a great image given the conditions, Jim. There is a ton of details in the larger version, especially around the face.

Re the noise, perhaps you can try blurring the background a bit. I would take a bit more from the bottom and make this tighter, more because I see some shake/oof areas there. And it doesn't add any more to the image.

Gorgeous colors and subject Jim and I don't see the noise to be much of an issue. Interesting about the "head roll" - I had no idea they did that.

Those colors are wonderful. I don't miss the tail at all. Even though I can see what someone said about a portrait I still think your crop is perfect to show those wonderful colors.
