Draw the Curtains

This image was taken while wandering around the Alabama Hills (Lone Pine, CA) during New Year's Day.

I'm not sure how long this scene lasted, because I was actually photographing the sunrise in the opposite direction (which often seems to be the case with me). All I know is that by the time I recomposed the shot and took a half dozen images, the curtains had been drawn and the show was over. Although brief, it was definitely one of the more memorable sunrises I've witnessed along the Eastern Sierra.

As always, any comments, suggestions or critiques are always welcomed.

Cheers!

~Eric

Great framing on this Eric. The mountains look great and really stand out. The foreground rocks look a touch green though could be my monitor. I always try to look over my shoulder when taking picture you never know what can sneak up on you. Cheers

Those clouds are sweet... You couldn't ask for a better frame for the bright peaks in the background. Nice one.

Nice catch. Is this a crop or a stitch? This scene is good enough to raise lots of questions about about how it was processed and whether more is potentially there.

That is very cool, Eric! Those clouds really couldn't have been more perfect, truly like curtains and to such a dramatic show of mountains too. The foreground looks a little funky - dark and a touch of green. I would try to perfect the processing there a little more - for this it's truly worth it. Keep it dark, but maybe reduce the contrast in the blackest of blacks, and fiddle with the color balance?

Hope you got this as a stitch!

I sure hope you got a stitch! This is high drama to say the least. You got one heck of a light show. The boulder mounds/hills are so sinister looking there in the dark too.

What a most unusual frame. Good think you turned around when you did.

Hi Eric,

Terrific capture and great timing. I agree with Floris about bringing out the detail in the fg rocks a little more, if possible. Special scenery for sure! Michael

This escaped my attention earlier - it's very dramatic!! I like this but would love to see the processing changed. It seems too dark in the foreground that and/or the "curtain" clouds are too dark.

Great conditions and good shot indeed! :toast:

Eric, just a stunning shot. Congrats on EP for this image. I'm guilty of looking in the opposite directions too, but I'm glad you turned around just in time to capture this one. Beautiful.

Congrats on a very unique, inspiring image. The light takes the eye right to the focus of the image and holds it there. I'm sure glad you turned around. A good reminder for all of us to take in the environment rather than getting tunnel vision.
