Clearing

Gallery: LandscapePosted February 7, 20112,874 views70 comments
The photograph is from near my campsite on the south ridge of Oregon's Three Fingered Jack peak. It's a long day or two days backpacking to reach it. A storm was clearing and there I was, at sunset, sitting just above the clouds on my own mountain island in the sky, not another soul for miles.

Thanks for any comments.

btw, some newer monitors have been rendering this too magenta for my taste, but not this one.

WOW! This is a magical scene with fantastic light! The composition is wonderful with lots of interest in the fore, middle, and background. I do not see too much magenta on my monitor. Absolutely stunning! My only nit is that you didn't post any specs or a larger version to enjoy.

PS: Also love the adventurous trek getting there! :jump:

Wow... this is the spot we were thinking about going last year huh. What an incredible image, Marc. Before long there won't be many dramatic peaks in the PNW that you haven't shot to perfection!

Yes it was. This was my second wintertime visit to the south ridge and fifth overall winter visit to TFJ. It's just so hard to get the conditions right. It's either so stormy you can't see or totally clear - rarely anything in-between on the crest, as it all changes so fast.

Love the recent images Marc. This is well balanced and the light looks fantastic! This image instills a perfect sense of warmth in a brutally cold scene. As for the color, I am not on a calibrated monitor, so I can't comment on that at the moment.

Excellent work Marc. Some of the blues look a tad strong (work monitor so take this with a grain of salt) especially on the shadow side of the mountain, but that is so minor. This has got to be a new favorite mine. The warm light is delicious.

We've got plenty of peaks, accessibility is the issue. I'd love to see anyone shoot from the upper ridges next to Mt.Thielsen, early season before the avy danger goes through the roof after new snow falls. That peak is even more dramatic than this! Sometimes it's like, 'well...that would be a great place to shoot, but the chances of dying are pretty high'...

I knew this was yours the second I saw it. Fantastic stunning image here Marc (might piss off the disturbed jealous type). What is not too like? Great composition, subject matter, lighting is fabulous, looks sharp, looks like processing was conservative... It also brings back memories of climbing this when I was a teen with my dad (although no snow on it at that time). Killer! Thanks for posting it and the inspiration. :toast:

As far as monitors go, unless calibrated effectively most, I find, lean WAY toward magenta. Goes without saying that any fine tuned critique needs to be on a good, and well calibrated monitor. This does not look too magenta to me.

What a composition... beautiful work. The texture to the FG snow is really nice, and a bit different than the smooth, featureless snow in some of your other winter images.

Beautiful light, I love the ridge-line up to the peak! I wouldn't mind seeing the peak off-centered to the right a bit more as well as a bit more space on the left.

Love the soft quality of light and mixture of lines captured here. There's a nice triangular tension between the peak, the fg tree and the sunlit snow line in the lower corners. Very nice!

That's a lovely image Marc with a really nice composition and light. that mountain is a teriffic shape and I love the way the mountain swirls around in one direction and the foreground tree mimics it in reverse to the other corner.

I think what gets me in this photo is the comp, the colours and light are fantastic as always. The tree in the foreground is awesome then you see the trees in the valley that lead to the trees on the ridge and then up to the peak, just perfect alignment ,genius Marc. I wont comment on the colour because I am not on a perfectly calibrated professional monitor  Cheers

I'd crop 10% off the top (assuming no more canvas available on the right)
Color looks perfect IMO. With the right conversion (in 32 bits to prevent posterization by rounding errors), IMHO, this would make an even better B/W.

You ever yell at the top of your lungs when up there? You know, to hear the faint echos...

I haven't, Matt. The landscape is enough for me to listen to. My thought on B&W is that if you have warm, soft, sunset light then why change it? I had similar conditions on this mountain once before: B&W

What I really like is the great light on the peak. I have a new monitor coming this week and cannot wait to see it on a really good monitor. Would love to see a larger version. A couple of days hike to get the shot! That is the supreme effort and thanks for the inspiration.

Love that photo (you linked). Hence my email query earlier ...
Good point, but I'm a sucker for a traditional B/W as well.
I errantly said if you had more canvas on the right, I meant left. (Dyslexic typer) So the spacing on the left tree could be near the spacing on the top, creating a better comp IMHO. Either way, this image is quite strong as is. The solitude in a place like this, I can only imagine, it's been months.

Hi Marc,
At 2am I saw the thumbnail and I thought it was cloudscape. I said "I'd better see this again tomorrow"
But what can I say? The scene is incredible, everything is white and the light is just magical I love the composition with that beautiful tree perfectly placed on the left.
I hate to say it's perfect because it doesn't help you. But it is.

Thanks, Tyson. I know you know what the view up here is like! I was sharing your pics with some guys on P.Net that were asking about the trip up here. BTW, I think Thielsen's N ridge would be the best perspective. I've done it several times before the avy danger got bad and it looked extremely productive, I just had bad weather.

The north ridge would be a good spot. Thielson's profile is beautiful from that aspect. I believe the Oregon PCT hits its highest point right around there, or possibly a few miles beyond. I would love to see this peak up close in winter. Summer is great though, too. There is some great tasting water on the north side.

Surprised no one has mentioned it but it appears to me that it's leaning slightly towards the right. It's the horizon on the right beyond the peak that gives me this impression. Could just be an artifact of the portrait orientation, though.
