Frozen Waves

This was taken along the frozen shore line of Lake Huron. It was a crazy day of snow storms blowing in and out, the wind was blowing pretty good and you can see that in the clouds and in the mid ground on the left. I find finding a good comp is difficult in the winter, I found this after the sun had set but it was the best colour of the evening.

Please let me know what you think of the comp and colours, I desaturated the blues by about 10 points. This is a single exposure processed twice for the tree line. Blended and used Tonk Kuyper's actions and masks. I also twice processed the jpeg version to bring out the foreground snow details. Posting for the web is an art form in it's self.

Canon 5D iso 100, 17mm, f/16 @ 13sec, please all c&c welcomed. Oh, any advice to unclogging a epson 4800 is greatly welcomed too.

First lovely picture very natural. with a lot of cloud movement. I have an Epson 4800 are you using OEM Epson inks or third party inks. If the former try four to five consequetive standard cleans. If that doesnt work go for the deep clean I have never known that fail. Assuming this works try to keep the humidity around the printer high. I use a damp flannel on a plastic saucer and use a large plastic sheet as an all over dust jacket below which is the aforementioned saucer and flannel standing on the output tray. It seems to work really well and even after a relatively long gap between prints it works first time without ink blocking. I'm afraid third party inks just seem to finish off the 4800 printer completely.

Very nice, Raymond. I really like the light on the snow, and it also shows some great textures. The lines work nice leading you into the scene. Great natural looking colors here too. I like this very much! Nice work.
I also like this with about 1/2 of the sky cropped off. Just a thought, wonderful as it is!

Ian thanks for your reply and comment I am using OEM inks and I have sent you off an e-mail. Nick thanks for critique and I played with a scroll crop and I think you might be right. Thanks guys. Cheers

I like the blues Raymond with the touch of warmth in the sky. The ominous sky and patterns in the snow are wonderful!

I had a lot of clogged print head issues with my Epson 2400. Tried everything including cleaning solution cartridges which really did not work. I guess the key is to use the printer frequently. I eventually got rid of my R2400 and now have a R2800 and try to keep it going at least once a week. No issues so far (knock wood). Never thought about the humidity factor that Ian mentions..... but makes a lot of sense especially in winter.

The color and processing look great to me. Composition-wise, I can see cropping a bit off the left side, since the image is a bit heavy on the right. Looks very nice as is, though.

Jason and Eva thanks for the comments. I will have to do a little edit and repost. Eva the printer was in active for awhile due to the birth of my son and I had been printing at least weekly. I had to move my computer and printer into the family room/kitchen because the baby was getting the office as a bedroom, in the kitchen we heat our home with a wood stove so the house is very dry. I do keep it covered and have a sponge with water inside to keep the humidity up around the heads. I bought the printer used from a doctor my wife worked with and it's a great printer when working. If it needs the head replace then it would be more cost effective for me to upgrade do to the fact of where I live. Cheers

I missed the ice crystals the first time I looked. I hope you captured a version with them more centralized leading into the picture. This is gorgeous. I think you are near where you want to be in terms of color temperature. I trust you played with the contrast levels before settling here.

RL i will have to go back and see about the ice crystals and different comps. It was getting late and I kind of rushed these exposures and plus the wind chill it was down to about -20 at this point. I was changing batteries after every bracket. Thanks for your kind words. Cheers

I mentioned blue shadow areas on the snow in my current post. I see that here too in a beautiful pleasing hue. It looks totaly natural to me. It looks like you have some partially buried chunks of ice there too? I'd like to be able to see those better in a larger version.

This works great for me in both regards. The snow structure in the fg leads me in nicely and it has a very appaling shape. The colors support the cold atmosphere. It looks pristine, but not inviting, but the emotional component makes this a successful image.

Beautiful view I like how the clouds mimic the ground features. I also like the overall color and tone of the image.

I like the light on the snow. You brought out the details in the snow very well. The colors look good: very natural - and i like the blues here with the slight touch of warm tones

Raymond, you captured an extraordinary moment after sunset. A consistent composition, natural colors, your processing works perfect for me. I can really feel the icy atmosphere.
