Lowland streaked tenrec

This animal was photgraphed under controlled conditions in the Masoala National Park in Madagascar. Different species of tenrec mimic various insectivores in the northern hemisphere. There are equivalents of hedgehogs, moles and shrews. This one, to a lesser extent, mimics porcupines. Those stiff hairs on the back of the head became raised if the animal is alarmed, and then can stick in your hands the way a procupine quill can, as our tour leader found out!

Great look at a rarely-seen critter, especially those fascinating hair/spine patterns.

Nice image of a seldom seen critter. It does seem just a bit soft. Thanks for sharing.

What an amazing subject, one I knew nothing of! A minor nit to my eye is the two stems coming down into his back, but it is not a deal breaker. Perhaps you could add some sharpness to just the eye/nose area to help distinguish it from the background. This is very cool  and I am glad you posted it!

Wow! Hadn't even heard of an animal with a name like this! Wish I had, though, because I could have earned more points on the Scrabble game I played recently!

Like how this image shows how well they blend into the rocks.

This is one of the species I missed out on in Mada David. This view does give a good view of its back patterns and colors, for that I appreciate it. The pose I find a bit awkward, as if it was trying to get away from danger perhaps? Correct me if I am wrong, maybe it was simply feeding. Still I would have preferred a better view of the head at least. Thanks for sharing and keep those unique Madagascar critters coming. :toast:
