Square Butte II + repost
by Tony Kuyper
sRGB converted imaged posted below.
Again, I'm still at the roadside rock formation near my home with this image. It was taken just a few minutes after my last post. My plan this morning was to catch the color in the clouds (last post), but just after sun came up, all hell broke loose in the clouds around me. There was a rainbow way off to the left (too far out to include in the frame) and texture and emerging light everywhere I looked.
This is a slightly more wide-angle version of the scene with hopefully enough difference in light to make it worthwhile to do sort of the series thing to show the rapidly changing conditions and the variation in light it produced.
Your thoughts and suggestions would as always be appreciated. And thanks again for the feedback on the last post. Once I got Firefox reset I've been enjoying the pictures here a lot more.

37 commentsI love the richness of the sky color and texture. Very fascinating and I only wish to have been there to experience it in person. I still do not see any difference between the two versions.
Might benefit from some subtle l.a.b. mode color variation.
The repost looks great. Ive never seen a round butte, but this square one is a beaut of a butte!

I like this a lot and the color palette is very natural to my eyes. I do like how you included much more sky which is really nice because clouds have some great layers too. Btw your cloud sharpening action is awesome, really helpful thank you.
Wonderful job and thanks for sharing
Very nice:)
This is wonderful. Between this and the previous you have two different impressions from nearly the same scene. Previously, it was about color and how I think the sky complimented the landscape. Here, in this version it's more about the sky and the landscape/butte becomes a nice compliment to the sky. Both are beautiful in their own right and it's amazing how one can convey two different impressions from the same scene - or nearly the same.

I can see a difference in the two images. The first looks flatter and less saturated than the second one. I'm on IE8.
Beautiful work, as always!

I spent the afternoon fooling around with your luminosity masks on some older images, and then some more time delving deeper into color management and this whole wide-gamut monitor situation. Your name kept popping up and I figured I should learn how it's pronounced.

This could be fun--winner should get a signed TK print
Im guessing K-eye-per.

I really love how you've used the cloud as the main subject here. And the way you've lined the cloud up with the rock formation shows great care and sense of compositional balance.
Good to see some wide angle stuff from you, Tony!
