Mountain Chickadee
by Brian Gatlin
Another chickadee to add to the recent mix. This is a Mountain Chickadee on the same (natural) perch as the Virginia's Warbler I posted a while back. Lots of birds enjoy this perch as it is very close to a small waterhole.
I like the simplicity of the image and the context given by the oak leaves. I think some people would probably prefer a few more degrees of head turn to provide eye contact, as the bird is ever-so-slightly turning away. However, I like the head angle here, and feel that the active look draws me in and takes me into the bird's world, wondering what it's looking at.
Canon 7D, 500mm + 1.4x TC, monopod.

Crop to 55% (9.9 of 18MP), NR on bg, sharpening on bird.

10 commentsI like the perch and the details you captured, nice clean background helps set off the bird. Looks like a little bit of a blue cast here, nothing a curves adjustment on the blue channel wouldn't fix.
Nicely done.

I agree with your own evaluation of this image. I like the size of the bird in the frame too. Nice light, pose, sharpness and detail. The broken edge of the branch I might tone down just a tiny bit but that is very minor.
