Egretta tricolor

Taken on the Gulf coast of Florida, the heron had been deeper in the water hunting and decided to walk towards the shoreline.

D200, handheld while laying in the sand, f6.3, 1/1500, ISO 250, 80-400mm VR at 400mm, natural light. Larger version posted for evaluation of sharpness and detail.

As always, I sincerely appreciate your comments & critiques. Thanks for looking.

I like the action, HA, and the foot being raised. What exposure comp did you use on this? It almost looks like it could go 1/3 brighter?

Thanks Bryan,

I did not use any EV compensation when I took this image, it was taken at 10:10 am and I didn't feel any compensation was needed. Any broghter and I may have blown the whites of the bird and certainly the bubbles in the water. While I normally prefer late afternoon or early morning light I have always tried to include images with varying light to my portfolio.

Beautiful work, Mia. I suppose this could be a bit brighter, but I would be happy with it just as it is. The pose, the eye contact, the raised foot make this a winner.

Another beautiful capture Mia. Perfect timing to get the wave and the raised foot just ahead of it. Techs look spot on to me. :toast:

The light is not quite as wonderful as your usual early morning shots but it is handled perfectly.

Nice detail, Mia. You didn't mention cropping but if you have any more image to add just under the wonderful foam, I think it might make your photograph even better. A tiny nit ;^)

I like this as posted. The detail in the larger image is excellent, as always in your work.

I especially like the look of the toes on the raised foot and the texture of the foamy water.

Thanks Mia, it's so hard to tell without seeing a histogram. Minor nit anyway. :wavey:

Love it. I also like that foot position flicking toward the viewer. Water looks pretty inviting.

I think what causes this image to be so very appealing, Mia, is that, beyond the perfect techs, it makes me think that I'm on the shore and this fellow is stepping towards me. It has presence. :toast: :toast:

Excellent pose and comp, Mia. That raised foot raises it up a few bars. I think the exposure looks very good at least on my monitor.

Mia:
I'm taken by all the action in this "still" image - the foot, bubbles/wave, water droplet from tip of bill, and intent orienting of the heron. All from a low angle and crisp, of course. :toast:

Mia- It's very difficult to expand on the technical aspects of this image, it's pretty much been covered in the comments above. What strikes me here, and with your previous posts, is your ability to take common avian behavior and render it extraordinary.

Yes - a trademark Mia image and perfect in every way. It's the raised foot and foam that make this jump out at the viewer.

Hi Mia. The rushing wave adds a lot of life to the photo. Beautiful lighting. Agree with Darren, could be just a little sharper on the neck and bill, easy fix.

Another special image from you Mia. The hunkered pose with that long beak pointing left fits so well with your composition and I love the sea foam setting. Something about the sharpness and position of the right foot makes it almost as interesting a focus point of attention as the head. Just excellent!
