Topsy Turvy

West Coast, New Zealand

A seascape without water. Driftwood and the southern alps, including Mt Cook and Mt Tasman in the background receiving afterglow well after sunset.

Canon 5DMkII, 16-35mm 2.8L, ISO 100, f13, 30 seconds.

Large version is heaps better.

amazing clarity. I just love the NZ-west-coast driftwood, I even brought one large chunk (maybe larger then the one in the fg here...) back home on the plane...
good blue-hour image.

Nice pic mate, sharp too. What's your procedure for web sharpening?

Barry, I use Marc's (Adamus) sharpening technique. You can easily google and find numerous versions of this on the web then experiment to find the right numbers for your tastes.

That sure is a cool piece of driftwood. Nice job on this one Kah Kit.
The faint mountains in the background give this a nice juxtaposition. I also like the faint wisp of clouds.
Well done

A Beautiful picture. I really like the colors and great light you shot this in. The white mountains against the blue sky really finishes it off nice. I also like that little bit of blue cast on the rocks from the sky. A nice blend of color and comp. Like this a lot.

Love the comp with the driftwood taking up almost all the frame. Simple and great image, it works perfect for me.

Kah Kit,

This is wonderful! The rich colors and soft light are excellent as is the arrangement. Clearly placing the "topsy turvy" piece of driftwood in such prominence leaves no doubt about what you're portraying here. the other elements of the stones and background mountain range are simply wonderful compliments to this. Just a lovely capture. No nits here.

Talk about a serious near-far composition! I'd be tempted to remove the slight vignetting in the upper corners, but beyond that, it's quite nice.

OK, this is two in a row for me, sorry. I really love the light here and your processing is great... but The big piece of wood looks just like it sounds. There's just too many layers that sort of competes with eachother. The light simply just doesnt carry this image.

Rick you don't have to be apologetic if you dislike the photos; it may confirm if a particular shot doesn't have universal appeal. This is one image that gets better the larger it goes. These large pieces of driftwood (this one about 2m long) are a compositional challenge but I'm happy with the layered result. I'm aware that this may not be a wow image, but IMO its quality lies in detail, texture and subtle lighting.

I really like this. Amazing detail in this. Focus-blended?

Awesome foreground choice. This is quite the spectacular log. I only wish the mountains were more prominent here.

Not focus blended Tony. My 16-35mm is quite sharp as long as it's not at f16 or smaller.

Wonderful textures and rich colours. Also like the similar profile of driftwood and alps.

What a great find seen well. The larger version only reinforces the notion.

Really, really cool. Great perspective and I love the soft light, especially together with that rich blue sky

Kah Kit,

I think this is good, but not your usually compelling great/phenomenal. Maybe a tad cliche to me needing a little more drama. The vignetting in the sky is a tad distracting.

Having said that I still think it is beautiful and worth posting.

Mark.
