Medano Meditations I

I went to the Great Sand Dunes on Wednesday to see the effects of a big wind-storm on the dunes. By the late afternoon, winds in the dunes were gusting to hurricane force, and all the tourists had left, so i had the whole park to myself. This is a shot of Medano Creek, a seasonal creek that just started flowing down the side of the dune-mass, as Spring arrives in the Rockies. The 'surge' waves of the creek are quite unique, and even more so this day as the strong winds pushed back on the waves to create wild standing-wave phenomena. The cloud of sand and dust began to obscure the mountains and sun, turning everything a golden hazy brown. It was quite surreal. This is not colorized or altered, i used a WB setting of 'Cloudy' which emphasized the warm monochromatic colors. My next post will feature a brief window when the skies partially cleared of dust at sunset, this shot was about half hour before sunset.

5Dmkii; 17-40; f/16, double processed RAW.
C&C Welcome!

Nice river flow, and the sky is excellent. Very nice moody image.

Wow! I love that golden light. Surreal is right. What an amazing body of work you have from this place.

Very neat shot Stan - love the repeating patterns in the water, nd that one lone bush is a great element IMO.

Oh this is very nice Stan, a much different view of this place. I can feel the sandstorm just looking at this and wondered if that was what I was viewing, even before reading your text. Great work.

This actually looks like it could be from "Dune," Muad' Dib. Crazy conditions from a photographer whose hot shoe level is a half a bubble off to be enjoying a sandicane. :jump:
This one will need to be in your book as well. Fantastic monochromatic shot!

Looks quite desolate; this is of course very awesome. I'm glad to hear you had the place to yourself after the tourists wussed out. Very trippy atmosphere.

Wow, I would never have guessed this was just from a white balance change. Awesome. I love the layers, there is so much to look at in texture. That one bush in the center is perfection; I'd crop the guy on the right.

astonishing colours stan. not 100% convinced by the placement of your two plants in the composition. but that doesn't detract much from the overall image.

Stan this is otherworldly and conveys a terrific feeling of space and lonlines. Great job under some brutal conditions.

Very surreal, Stan. Must have taken forever to get the sand out of your hair

Can you crop the twigs on the right for me?

Stan, I see you're saving your best for ESS. I liked your other one but this is exceptional. The bush out there is a nice addition for perspective. Is your equipment ok?

Incredible image Stan. That golden light is amazing. Has to be one of the most unique images of the Great Sand Dunes, especially considering the conditions you experienced in making this image. Fantastic.

Floris: yeah just for you ill crop the bush  I didnt get any sand in my hair cause i wore a winter cap/hood to protect my face, even though it was probably 60 degrees the wind was so strong my fingers went numb.
Dean: my mkii malfunctioned before this shot when sand got in the lens contact, but i cleaned it out and i think everything is ok now
Thanks folks, hope you can check out my fav shot tomorrow!

I really like the warm tones throughout like a natural sepia! The texture of the water is great and the placement of the lone tree is awesome.

Thanks, Pavel.
No, i have plenty of horizontals though! It was too windy so i didnt want to fuss with my camera much--just take shot, quickly put back in bag, quickly pull out, take another shot...a lot of them i had to shoot without even looking in the viewfinder, i just had to guess how they would turn out
