Past, Present, and...

Past, Present, and Future
I had an image request today for an "unusual" Orca shot, so went combing thru my files and found this shot from 2006 sitting there in raw, unprocessed form. Bonus.
I liked how the vapour rising from an exhalation seconds before helped convey a sense of the recent past, and how the head just dipping into the water portended a coming dive. Seconds later all traces of the Orca were gone - but the pixels remain.
I've talked many times in my image commentaries about seeking out unusual lighting to produce dramatic images. In this case it was late afternoon and we had strong, low-level backlighting that illuminated the vapour, water droplets and the Orca itself from behind (and behind everything was a vertical cliff in deep shade). Only exposure adjustments and light sharpening performed on this image.
Subject: Killer Whale or Orca (Orcinus orca) initiating a dive
Location: Northern BC Coast (Great Bear Rainforest), Canada
Camera: Nikon D2x
Lens: Nikkor 300 mm f2.8 VR lens - handheld. VR on and in "Normal" mode.
Exposure: 1/2500s at f2.8. ISO 200. -1.33 stop compensation from matrix metered exposure.
Crop: Full frame vertically, a little cropped off each end
Comments and feedback greatly appreciated...probably better to view larger version prior to doing so...
Cheers...

18 commentsWhoever requested this will be pleased. What strikes me about this image, is you took a spectacular subject and used it to enhance an abstract image. To me, it's similar to Marsel Van Oosten's recent bear image where the surrounding elements were used to draw and captivate the eye, and the fauna subject was used as an anchor for the larger scene.

Thanks. Yep, they were mighty happy. Going on their website plus onto a run of brochures plus a few other places. I think I made a good 25 cents off that deal (totally kidding - I did just fine).
Cheers...

This is a great shot of water vapor that happens to have an Orca anchoring it. I really like the horizontal lines in the lrc and the thin wake with water pouring off his tail in the other.

RE: your statement: "I'm glad people like you don't enter competitions (or do you?)". Funny you should ask that - I was just talking about this with a colleague of mine yesterday. I have entered two in my life, and after that I figured I had to quit if I wanted to keep my record intact (2 for 2)
Kidding aside, I have absolutely nothing against photo competitions, but I have to say they're pretty low on my priority list of things to be doing with my images...(virtually any conservation cause I can assist with imagery comes in higher).
Thanks for the kind words...
