Colorado Rattler

It's Spring, and snakes of all kinds are out and about in my neck of the woods. This rattlesnake had just won a small skirmish with a coyote and wasn't in the mood to be photographed, so I snapped just a few and then turned around to walk away and almost stepped on a bull snake (I'll post a shot of him later). I returned to the spot the next day and found four rattlers and the same bull snake, all within 5 feet of each other. Mating behavior?

OK, that's too close for comfort. Great pose though, with different sections of the coiled body showing. And the head on stare is freaking me out  Very nice (in a creepy sort of way).

I find the mud on the face to be very intriguing. Do you know why? You timed the click well to catch the extended split tongue. I guess in a perfect world there would have been a glint in that baleful eye!

Hi Guy,

I quite like your composition here. To me the coils are visually interesting and there's little (or nothing) to distract my eye. The tongue is great - well timed on that. In a perfect world I think a little more depth of field might have strengthened this shot, but I realize that the trade-off in shutter speed (if you stopped down) may have made it impossible to capture the tongue the way you did.

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Primitive and evil looking critter! You certainly struck a viseral chord here (and I don't have a snake-phobia). I find the comp a touch better without the void in the upper right. But really - this images screams YIKES. I like it and well done!
