Apoptosis

This is, I think, my most creative, bizarre, and puzzling photo. I took this in a pitch black lava tube cave in Lava Beds National Monument with some creative illumination that took me 5 hours over two days to get right (single exposure). It's ~3 feet of solid ice with lava rocks and air bubbles embedded.

You can see a larger version on my website: LARGE!

This is definitely a great find, Floris, and the larger image shines with details. I do believe this looks breathtaking when printed large.

I don't think I've ever seen this one before. I'm glad you explained what it was too. This is pretty darn phenomenal when you think about the ice being so tick and yet still so clear. Beautiful color and really neat texture within the ice.

Still reminds me of the cartoon on Nickalodeon my kids used to watch..... Monsters. Aside from that crazy comment, this is a great find Floris and the graphic quality is super! You have a nack for always finding something different that makes our jaws drop. Thanks!

Still a phenomenal image, and it still looks like stocking feet.

Did you post this on NPN previously? I distinctly remember seeing this image before, but I am not now finding it in the ES&S Gallery where I usually browse. In any event, this is certainly one of the best compositions of this type that I've ever seen.

An incredible natural abstract, Floris! The streams of bubbles make the rocks look like they're speeding through space or something. The large version is particularly fascinating and very 3D. Great job of capturing this unique phenomena. I'm glad you were persistent and got it right so that we could share the wonder of it. :toast:

Probably my favorite of your work. The story behind the capture is the real icing for me - I can definitely relate there, and it's just thrilling to see you nail it like this. I'll never forget seeing this in your camera for the first time out in the PH. Zooming in, I knew it was one of the most unique and fascinating images I'd ever seen.
