Separation

Here's an image from last spring in the Del Norte Redwoods. I really enjoyed the way the bright sunset light kind of separated the elements, bringing an almost calm and inviting feel to an otherwise chaotic forest scene. This is the type of image that really puts Tony's luminosity masks to the test. I used them quite a bit throughout the processing of this image... for the exposure blend, localized contrast adjustments, and for dodging and burning specific tonal values. Other than these adjustments there were some texture increases and decreases in certain areas and saturation masks for the saturation work. That's pretty much it.

As always, I welcome and critiques or suggestions. Thanks for checking it out! :toast:

1ds3, 24-105mm @ 55mm, no filters
f16 iso200 exposures from 1 to 5 seconds, partially blended by hand and partially with lum. masks.

Beautiful scene and image, Ryan, but that background is still quite hot.

Some incredible light you achieved here. It just pulls you into that warm bright background. I keep looking around trying to find a little fairy hidden in a corner  . Magic shot! :toast:

Jeffrey, I actually left the background pretty hot intentionally. I think if it was toned down any more then it wouldn't give the same sense of direct light. It also needed to be quite bright back there to be able to brighten up the dark areas up front... I think it would come across a little flat looking if I evened out the dynamic range more.

The yellow absolutely glows in this image. Its a bit clipped in sections, but yellow should always be bright. You've done a nice job with this one Ryan.

You know, I don't think I've seen any sunset-in-the-redwoods type images. This is really warm and a unique and unexpected look at a forest. Thanks for experimenting with the masks.

You've really captured an intense difference between the deep dark forest and the bright world outside. I like it.

WOW...beautiful light and beautiful image! Small suggestion though, if this were mine...I'd add a little more green back to those ferns. It will give the image more depth.

Just beautiful, Ryan. One of the better forest scenes I've seen. That hot background is an eye magnet though.

Absolutely beautiful Ryan. The quality of the light is incredible and the design of your composition is outstanding. Your processing worked very well with dynamic range I can only dream of. Superb.

Wow....love the composition here and lighting. The colors are so warm, I think I'd like them pulled back a little actually (or maybe a little less monochrome?), but this is really great. :toast:

Beautiful! I like it a lot from the background (which may be toned down just a bit more without losing the impact) to the branch against the redwood trunk on the left.

A nice mix of light here from hot to dark Ryan, I also like the mix of large and small. Maybe a touch more green down below will help complement the Redwood.
