Heaven and Hell

Taken on the last day of 2008. This is a water retention pond on Joint Base Balad, Iraq. Not many landscape opportunities at a location surrounded by barbed wire fences and t-walls. This was one of just a limited few places I was able to photograph. Well, up until some rent a cop turned me in as this suddenly became a security risk...you know...because you can see a fence! Yeah, they have rent a cops here too. I took photos at this same exact spot for almost 2 full years with no problems.

Thanks for looking.

1ds3, 16-35, .9gndsoft, single exposure.

WOW! I'm glad you were able to get this for your efforts before getting 'turned-in'. That's too bad. I never imagined nature putting on such a great show that area of the world.

A very powerful photo! Great clouds making great lines, and the color is magnificent. Perfect title too.

Fantastic shot! One of few shots I have seen where I can say there is nothing to improve.

Nicolaus,
A wonderful image and I can understand the title. I can also understand your frustration.
Stay safe,

Awesome sky, Nicolaus. Great color and reflections. The pebbles and rocks make a nice fg as well as it's shape complimented in the scene. Too bad it's such a dangerous place... heaven and hell is a great title.

The colors, lines of the fiery clouds and the inclusion of the FG makes this an exceptional shot. I actually wish the hand of man wasn't there but it surely doesn't deter from it. Congrats on your EP!

Amazing sky, well set in a comp with the reflection. Too bad about the hassle, buy I have a feeling that you will be finding more beauty on JBB, or where ever else life takes you.

Congrats on the WP!

Oh, Nicolaus! This is a gorgeous image. I'd favor a little off the top but also know that tends to be a subjective preference of mine. Love the color with the rocks in the foreground and nothing can beat a sky like that and with reflections to boot! Congrats on garnering an EP for it-- well deserved. :toast:

Thanks for the comments everyone. Glad I won't have to deal with that place anymore! Moments like this were all that kept me going for a while there. On to better skies and hopefully, better photos.
