Carter Notch Fox

It's been a while since I've had the op to shoot wildlife, but I wanted to share a shot of an experience while hiking to the AMC's Carter Notch Hut this past weekend.

The foxes that frequent the area around the cabin are a bit skittish, but accustomed to human contact enough to allow for some close crawling...

In full disclosure, I cloned a few snowflakes into a few more snowflakes...

The environment surrounding the fox really enhances the total effect. Handsome specimen. I have one roaming the woods behind my house, but there is no way I could get this close. Nice image. :toast:

Gorgeous individual (not hard to see why people want their fur :frown: ), beautiful look on his face, would never have guessed about the snowflakes (you definitely didn't overdo it IMHO). All-around captivating image.

The very low perspective helps make this a distinctive shot. Ideally, one would wish for there to be no willow (?) shoots in front of the fox to better accentuate the subject against that nice dark background, but there was nothing you could do about that. This specimen seems nicely fluffed up. Was the outside temp quite cold?

Hi Jim,

Very nice scene - makes me wish I had more foxes in my neck of the woods. I have to admit that at first glance that some of the snowflakes looked way too similar to be natural (no two snowflakes alike, right?). Totally kidding...

Overall I quite like this image and think the fox is positioned absolutely optimally within the frame. I agree with Lon about the willows but, as he said, nothing you could do about that. On my monitor the image does look just a little high in overall contrast - I first noticed it on parts of the fox and then when I examined the full frame I thought the same - darks just a little too dark and whites just a little too white (but certainly not by much).

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

Jim,

What a beautiful shot of a really beautiful fox. The look on his face, DOF and composition are all great. Personally, I wouldn't have added the extra snow flakes as this is a stunning image all on it's own. Thanks for posting. Cheers!
