This bison was scratching an itch in mid summer in the Haden Valley, Yellowstone. From the condition of the trees, I would say that this was a favorite place for ths activity.

Hello,

Interesting behavior shot. I have seen elk rubbing their antlers on trees to remove velvet or to show their aggression but I've not seen bison doing this but If you got an itch you can't get to with a hoof finding a convenient tree makes sense. I think a little more DOF and if possible a lower shooting angle would have improved this shot a bit.

Good unusual perspective on a bison! I like that the eye is almost obscured, but is in fact looking past that pine trunk. A tighter aperture for more depth of field might have made kept the foreleg and hump zone in better focus.

Cool image, I agree the image could have used a little more dof, other than that the trunk going down the face is distracting, but I dont know if you could have avoided this or not by pulling your car forward a bit.

Hi Jack,

I'm with Robert in thinking this is a good behavioural shot. Really hard to execute here given the number of trees obscuring the subject (but remove those trees and there goes the interesting behaviour!). I tend to agree that more DOF here would have helped, but when I look at your tech specs I realize that it would have been tough to impossible to stop down much more...

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...
