Egretta rufescens

The Dancer

Taken May 15, 2009 at a local county park in FL near where I lived there.

D200, HH, kneeling very low in the water, f6.3, 1/1000, ISO 200, 70-300mm VR at 300mm, natural light, 75% of the original image. My 80-400mm VR was off being repaired so I took the 70-300mm VR.

I like how this image shows the water, shore, wrack line, sand and the young growth of the spartina. I also love the pose.

I've included a 1200 pixel version, please use it to evaluate sharpness & details.

As always, I sincerely appreciate your comments & critiques. Thank you for looking.

Great shot Mia! Found this species as well while I was down there last week - maybe the same bird - Got some shots, but nothing this nice. Wonderful detail and sharpness. Well done.

You really captured the fishing behavior well Mia. I think watching these egrets stagger around the shallows like drunks is just amazing. :toast:

really nice. Sharpness and detail in the large version are awesome.

The pose is sweet and you have done well to show the environment as well. :toast:

Mia, what I like best is how well this captures the crazed behavior of these birds. I like the spread wings, and the detail of the long messy shaggy neck plumes. For me the only nit is that I wish the bird was a few inches farther left or you had taken a step to the right, as I think the pink of the bill would stand out better against the grassy background where there is less sand.

Fantastic feather detail, Mia, as well as color and habitat. Wish there were just a little more water below his feet.

Oh how I love to watch these guys! They are just too funny and you caught a great pose. I too like all the different sections of environment caught all in one.

Mia, the small version really does this no justice. Love the detail. As normal, all your techs are great. I really like the wing spread and the view looking towards the shore.

My thanks for the comment thus far on this image.

Brian, I took about 300 images of this bird that morning and do have a few where the pink of the bill was in front of the green growth of the spartina, perhaps I will post another soon.

Jerry, I do have more water at the bottom in the original frame but it went very quickly out of focus about where I cropped it. This is a large bird for using f6.3, fortunately the bird was lined up in such a way the dof worked very well on the egret.

Ed, some times they do stagger around like drunken sailors when in feeding mode and are very entertaining!

I love that walking he's giving, reminds me of something from Monty Python. I'd love to see one of these someday. Very cool :toast:

Great wing position allowing a full view, with excellent detail, of all the underwing feathers. I like the shadow of the beak on the wing, the OOF view of the habitat, the splash and swirl of water at the feet, and the overall lighting. Two thumbs up!

Mia I keep looking at your image and just love the subject. It is so sharp and exposure spot on. But, I just do not know about the BG. Maybe it is the line across that bothers some. I might tone down the brightness of the top BG some and maybe try to blurr the line more. The reddish egret is one of my favorites and you sure captured him well. Anyway just my humble thoughts  .

A very well captured image for what looks to me to be a funny looking bird, Mia. It must be interesting to see this fellow in action! The background is a little distracting because it is too much in focus: as you know, especially now that I've experimented with adjusting bokeh, I think it would really make this bird stand out. Of course, all you need to do is have the patience to select him in CS4 and use the free trial version of the program. (Actually, there is another simple selection method in that software that may work here too.).....or maybe it's really not that important in this case anyway!

Nice capture, Mia. How you must miss Florida right now during a long winter in Utah. I can't wait to get back to Fl to re try capturing these guys with all that I've learned from you and this forum this year. Sharon

This is excellent Mia! The biologist in me loves the way this pose exposes the "frame" of the birds body and I really can't think of a posture that better displays the whole bird - feathers and all. If it were mine I wouldn't touch the background - it is what it is and I enjoy seeing it too, in context with the egret and behavior. I enjoy this image very much.
