Taking a stab at it

The title represents the birds attempt to catch a fish and my attempt at bird photography. My first posted picture here at NPN entitled "Patience Rewarded" is the outcome of both of these stabs.

Captured at Willowbrook Pond, Staten Island 12/24/09.

Please provide much needed advice and criticism.

Taken with a Canon Rebel XTi EFS 55-250 f4.5-5.6 IS
ISO 200 1/500 f/6.3

Rotated to level out the water/bird. 30% cropped and auto-enhanced.

I like the stop action and the water splash. The exposure seems to be spot on. The larger stick behind the bird is a distraction and easily cloned out if you choose. You are short of the max pixel dimensions by about 14%. You also have the option of posting a larger picture. All this helps in critiquing, so one can actually get some idea of the sharpness of the picture. Finally, the best composition would be to have the most canvas in front of the bird and less behind, As is, a centered subject usually is not desirable.

Jimmie,

I like the action in your image and the great colored water.
