Found this little character outside of it's den near the road this weekend, my first Colorado badger! Now that I know where it lives I hope to return this week for better shots.

Good low perspective. The sidelighting is nice, but it looks a bit harsh. Overall I find the foreground and background cluttered, but I don't know if there's another angle to be found at this location. Good luck on the second try! :wavey:

Hi Guy,

Given the harsh light I think you did quite a good job here - the badger is nice and sharp and I quite like the inclusion of those claws! Ditto me on Marsel's comments on the clutter you had to deal with (tho' to me it's more the background than the foreground that distracts a little).

Cheers....good luck on your return trip(s) to get more shots...

Brad

I love the dirt on the top of the badgers head. I also like the inclusion of the claws. Good job of holding those whites in this contrasty animal. He/she looks very relaxed even though you must have been very close at 300mm. Good job and I hope you see this badger again.

Hi Guy, I do not know about American badgers, but the southern African Honey Badgers have very large home ranges, sometimes hundreds of square kilometers. So unless it is a mother with very small young it is certainly no guarantee to find them in the same burrow or area the day after you saw them. I would be curious to hear whether you find him again.
I agree you dealt well with the harsh lighting and the low angle. What I really like is the relaxed portrait pose and the visible claw. I envy you getting so close to a badger and wish you good luck with your second chance!

I also like the low angle fo the shot Guy. I have only seen one wild Badger in Colorado up at RMNP, but he was hauling through a field and I could not get a good shot. Congrats on the find!!

I agree with the other comments about lighting and background. You did manage to frame him well. Hopefully this is a home burrow and not something he had just excavated seaching for the day's lunch!
