Needles

Yosemite NP, California, USA.
For the life of me I cannot remember which waterfall this shot was taken by, though I do remember it was huge. I saw this backlit pine tree with its tufts of long needles and then simultaneously noticed the fine backlit spray thrown out by the tremendous force of the falls which caused it to billow out and envelop everything including the tree. I realised that if I used a medium shutter speed I could cause that backlit water spray to stretch out into long needles of light which would echo that of the pine tree.

PS still on my hols at the moment I will get back to making more comments upon my return. Ciao!

It almost looks like a summer rain shower, and I'm looking for the rainbow. Wonderful image and I love the backlighting Ian.

Well seen and executed. I loved it when I saw it on Timecatcher recently. The best landscape shot I have seen for at least a few weeks.

I like this quite a bit! I have never seen any shots with backlit water slightly blurred like this. Very original and very nice!

Nice shot. I find the small bundle of needles in the lower right corner a bit distracting, and I am now carrying a piece of cord to tie such things out of the way while I shoot. Unfortunately the last time I did that I forgot to untie the string, but it was in a popular area and I imagine someone set the branch free later!

Just superb. I thought it was snow or rain in the background. The backlit needles and needles of light complement each other perfectly. Great creative vision - really inspiring image.

Quite different from most of the work you post on NPN, but I really like it. The backlightning works very well and the needle-like spray is very effective as a background. Very creative idea!

Ian,

This is outstanding! If I had to guess, probably lower Yosemite Falls. I love the highlighted branches and needles, but it is the background that really makes this happen. I do with the cluster of needles in the LRC weren't there, but it certainly doesn't ruin the image for me. As Harley said, this is quite unique and a wonderful take-away from Yosemite. Congrats!

A difficult comp to pull off, but I think you have done it perfectly. This is a prime example of how pre-visualization can really pay off.

I think this is a very beautiful exposure Ian. Have you desaturated this or is it just the backlighting thats making this kind of monochromatic in its look and feel? Love how you saw this. Dont know if a crop from the right to eliminate that LRC and URC would work or not..Im sure this would look great in print.

One of the very best intimate nature images I've ever seen IMO. I just love this, Ian. The light, rain, everything. It's just enchanting! I wish more people would open this thumbnail! :toast:
