Stars over Thunder Hole

During a twenty minute exposure, I used flash bursts to freeze several incoming waves, alternating between red and yellow gels. A few flash bursts with a blue gel were used to illuminate the background cliffs.

Certainly one of the most bizzare and otherworldly looking images I've seen rendered as such in the field. It's a bit too weird for my taste but I give it a lot of points for originality!

Whoa, A+++++ for originality here, but it is a little too pyrolitic for my landscape tastes. Otherwise thanks for sharing this!

Fantastic! This has a level of creativity in nature photography that is hard to match. What an idea and what a picture!

This is genius in action!! I just love it: more than the execution (flawless btw) but the concept in itself blows me away.

I took a break from NPN for a couple of weeks and it is such a treat to come back and see such a well made photograph. Absolutely amazing!

Wow, incredibly creative image! :toast: :toast: My favorite part is the unique star trails and the blue gel on the rock...the red and yellow in the water is a little too theatrical for me.

WOW, a shot that maybe attempted sometime in the future, but obviously will never be duplicated to these results, Ian. A very creative and original piece of photographic art.

Thanks for all the comments! The dark of night is the closest thing to a blank canvas we as photographers will ever see. The use of artificial light (like flash) allows one to choose the colors in the scene, rather than have them chosen by natural conditions. The blend of long exposure movement contrasted with action frozen by flash can be surreal. I know this image is too weird for some folks, but let's face it: when up at all hours of the night stumbling around in the dark trying to find something to photograph, things get pretty weird on their own -- so I figured I might as well go with the flow!

Really weird image Ian. I like the blue rock and the sky, but the water color is not my cup of tea - they are too intense for the scene IMO. But still a very creative effort - kudos for that

As nearly everyone else has written, kudos for thinking outside the box and crafting such a provocative image. I don't think I would hang this on the wall, but I could stare at it for a long time.

One of the most unique and interesting images I've seen in ES&S in a while. I normally don't favor star trails that aren't exceptionally long, but I find these work well in relation to the rest of this otherworldly scene. I might have liked a little more breathing room at the bottom of those waves, but this is undoubtedly well done as is. Great stuff!
