As you all have probably noticed, the quality of posts on the ES&S forum has gotten tremendously good. So, choosing a single image each week is an increasingly challenging task. More often than not there are a number of images we would love to choose as the weekly pick, so we've decided to share with you what we believe are the weekly highlights - a few images that are worth viewing if you happened to have missed them, in addition to a few thoughts as to what drew us to the chosen image. We aim to have this as a weekly posting, shortly after the weekly picks are announced. Hopefully you find this a useful addition, and if you have any suggestions for further ways to improve on the idea please share them with us!

There are typically two categories we see posted on the ES&S forum - the grand landscapes, and smaller more intimate, sometimes abstract and creative interpretations of nature. Both are important facets of nature photography, so to emphasize each in their own light we've split up the highlights in those two objective categories. Please note that there is no distinction or weight between the grand landscape and the intimate (ie. your chances of being chosen as a weekly pick or highlight are unaffected by the 'genre' of the image, as long as it fits in with the ES&S guidlines). Every week has a different mix of images, types, moods and techniques, but this grouping in particular stood out this week.

Grand Landscapes:
Kevin Trinkner's "Waiting for the Sun" -

Intimate & Abstract:

Kevin Trinker's "Waiting for the Sun" was chosen as the weekly pick for it's simple zen like beauty and tranquility. It's almost always true that simple is good and makes for beautiful imagery. Obviously an iconic and frequently photographed location, but it's status as an icon doesn't take away from the natural beauty of the location and conditions. The colors and lighting are tranquil and this is simply a beautiful scene; one that we'd would love to hang on our own walls.

Great work everyone!

I think it's a great idea! I agree, there has been some really excellent work posted lately, and this gives us a nice way to see some of the highlights. Thank you guys for taking the time to post your thoughts as well, it's very much appreciated.

Floris, thanks to you and the ESS mods for your time and effort on this!

All of those shots are worth "a tip of the hat". And it's great that the mods will spend time giving credit to superb photographs like these.

Great idea Floris - I really appreciate the time this must add to the process of picking, and a big thanks should go to you and the rest of the ESS Moderators for all the work y'all do.

I have a hard enough time picking from all the great shots in the WC Gallery--especially since the variety is extreme there. I don't envy the task of picking one from all the fabulous shots on ESS, i like the idea of giving some credit to the 'runners-up'

Your amount of effort a dedication goes above and beyond the call of duty for moderators. If there was a medal i recommend "you" for them. Great idea. Take it from a perennial runner up or second place.
