The fall foliage in Southern Illinois is spectacular. Much of the Shawnee National Forest is "mixed deciduious forest", meaning that it has many kinds of trees. Each species of tree has its own way of changing colour in the autumn. Therefore, mixed forests have some of the most spectacular fall colours.
