My intent for this morning was to shoot sunrise at Chiquita Lake, up above Ypsilon Lake. This was a hike I had never done and much of it was off trail. Obviously, to get there for sunrise meant hiking in the dark. I knew that I was supposed to follow the stream up but didn't realize that at this time of year there are numerous streams coming down. I followed the wrong one and as the time for sunrise approached I still hadn't reached the lake, so I looked around for any available composition. The lighting was spectacular and only after shooting this image did I notice that Chiquita Lake is in the middle left corner of this image. The mountain in this scene is part of a ridge coming down from Mount Chiquita.
