The elephant died months ago and to us looked like a sculpture of leather and bones forever to remain as the desert's reminder to us of its privation. However, to those who live in this arid and unforgiving environment, what is loss to one is an offering to another. This spotted hyaena, scarred through countless battles, right ear missing, tattooed by a scar down the full length of its face, and constantly on alert, showed us this was no bag of bones. I couldn't imaging the sharpest knife cutting it, but the hyaena, with its powerful jaws, managed to tear the elephant hide like it was paper.
