From my experience, Zion is one of the most diverse National Parks - from rock formations to climates and weather. The main Virgin River Canyon is the most popular area within the park; but for any extended trip its good to go east through the tunnels to Checkerboard Mesa; or travel west to Virgin then up to the Kaibab Plateau. On this late October morning I went east in search of red Big Tooth Maples. I found one in the dry bed and waited until the first sun rays lit the area.
