My fascination with photographic images of nature began in 1968 when, at age 12, I browsed a copy of Eliot Porter's The Place No One Knew: Glen Canyon of the Colorado River. But I did not become a photographer until 1981 when I purchased a 35mm SLR to take on backpacking trips in my home state of Colorado. Eight years later I traversed southern Utah for the first time and fell in love with the canyons of the Colorado Plateau. Since 1991, I have returned to the Plateau every year but two for a glorious week of trekking and photography.
Recently I have diversified my portfolio to include night cityscapes captured during my business trips to Asia.
I shoot film only (so far), primarily using a "Baby Graphic" medium format press camera modified for packing. Film originals are scanned, retouched, and balanced digitally. Aside from the denoising and sharpening necessary to the digital process, it is my philosophy and general practice to restrict digital manipulations of my images to those which are analogues of traditional darkroom techniques, such as general and local exposure and contrast manipulations.
