Golden-winged Warbler

I think this might be the best photo I have ever taken?

Yesterday while up at the Carden Alvar in S. Ontario I heard this guy singing and had high hopes of achieving a photograph of him. I set up for him and eventually he cooperated. He only landed on my perch for a brief instant and I wasn't sure if I had captured the moment. When I looked in the viewfinder I was so ridiculously happy :) Isn't it great when you visualize a shot and it all comes together...

I hope you enjoy this one. Cheers!

Camera Model: Canon EOS 40D
Shutter speed: 1/400 sec
Aperture: 9
ISO: 200
Lens: EF500mm f/4L IS USM +1.4x
Full frame :D

Glenn, I'd be jumping up and down with this one :) Certainly one of your best, and a great species to have in your collection. I've got no images of this sp., and strangely I've had much better sightings in the Neotropics than I ever have in N. Am. Curious, did you use playback to pull him in?

This is certainly up there with one of the finest warbler photos I've ever seen! What a beautiful species as well. Congrats!!!

My first thought when looking at this? "That's a Royse warbler shot".

That's a huge compliment, given what I think of his Warbler shots. Congrats. :toast:

Masterful shot -- a standard-setting image -- and a great backstory on its achievement -- congrats. One technical question -- when you "set up for him" and he "landed on my perch," what exactly do you mean?

This is awesome Glenn. I do not think it gets any better than this. You have captured all of the subtle colors perfectly. Especially nice capturing this species. They are tough to find, let alone get a shot like this. Congrats!!! :toast: :toast:

Definately one of your best, and a Warbler species not often seen, let alone photographed.
Echoing another members question, as there are many folk here have the same enquiring minds .. when you 'set up' for him, did you use a recording of the call to bring him down ?
Otherwise I have no clue how you'd get a Warbler to fly down to your perch :-)
Of course if its your little secret, then I completely understand. :toast:

Big congrats on landing this species, Glenn, and of course in your usual excellent fashion. Top notch. The slightly parted bill is an added plus to an already taut and alert pose.
