Waterfall (EDIT: with repost)

This is the tufa waterfall which comes just after the cascade shown in previous images. Several photographers have shot this wide, taking in the whole of the formation and a little of the plunge pool, as well. So I decided to frame tightly and make an almost abstract composition, not just to be different but also to give a sense of the flow of the water and the patterns it makes.

This is one of my favorites from your recent posts. I really like the criss crossing patters of water. There is a bit of a blue cast that I would try to get rid of though.

I like your comp a lot, I think the more intimate view really makes the water come alive. I do think the blues seem a bit strong here!

What a great waterfall image. The patterns of water are wonderful. The blue cast might be a little strong, but I think that's a matter of taste. Great image!

An outstanding waterfall photograph, no doubt. The composition and the light is perfect. I like this big cross in the lower right area. Really great work Julian!

Julian: This is one of the most original and dynamic waterfall compositions I have ever seen. I think the processing could use some work, however.

With large, complex waterfalls (like Bond Falls in the UP of Michigan) I like to do exactly the kind of thing you've done here: extract patterned sections. This is very, very nice; the crisscrossing pattern is really eye-catching. I'd be inclined to pull out some of the blue here, but not too much.

The blue here seems to be a bone of contention so I went back to the tranny and had a rethink. The blue is still strong but, on the original, it's somewhat less cyan. This repost is very faithful to the original.

Julian,

I really like this tight, intimate composition of these cascades and the patterns and lines created by the flow. I would agree with others about the blue - just a tad too much for my taste. But then it is all about our own personal tastes anyway.

Nice work.

Without a doubt one of the very best intimate waterfall scenes I've ever seen captured.

Wowwwwwww. Congrats on your original treatment of this. Obviously a great scene, but your vision of it takes this to a new level of appreciation. Makes me want to go back and crop a lot of my old waterfall shots, but I know that would be disappointing. I'm just going to take this lesson and approach future waterfalls with a new appreciation for the more intimate details. Thanks!

As an abstract, color treatment is a matter of tast, but as a depiction of nature, I appreciate the more sublte version.

I like this a lot Julian. I might take some of the blue/cyan cast out which would allow some of those greens to pop too.

This is really nice, Julian. I don't care what the tranny looks like, I would take out some of the blue. I think it detracts from an otherwise terrific image.

Thanks everyone.

When I originally pre-visualised this, I had in mind that the water would take on the colour of the sky so I was a bit resistant to removing the cast. Having just played around in PS, I see that you guys have a point. The greens do indeed pop and the whole image becomes more balanced. So thanks again for your valued feedback, everyone!

Laurent,

This is just a killer waterfall capture!! I love the diamond patterns the streams of water are creating with the mossy rocks. the image is so dymaic, and lively. I agree with taking the blues out a bit to make those greens really come to life, but not too much.

Superb capture!!!!

Love the motion of the water in this shot but I gotta agree with just about everyone else here and suggest toning down the blue for a more neutral WB point.

Gorgeous. The lines are amazing, as is the glowing blues you have throughout. The touch of green really finishes the image nicely, giving it a good balance.

Beautifully captured cascades and patterns. I really like the composition. For my taste, it is a little too blue, but that's already been pointed out. Regardless, it is gorgeous :toast:

This is very impressive. I love the patterns all the little cascades create. I do think it is a little heavy in the blues.

What an amazing arrangement of falling water. My eye bounces around effortlessly studying all the different angles and lines. While I don't mind the blue color cast so much, I did open up a copy of this in PS and applied Bill Chamber's color cast technique and to my my eye, it really made this perfect. Excellent work!
