Dunes & Ocean

During a visit to the Namib desert a couple of weeks ago, I took a scenic flight over the dunes of Sossusvlei. The Namib desert is one of the oldest deserts in the world and has dune fields over 1,000' high. It's an incredibly beautiful and photogenic area. Usually the coastal region is blanketed in fog resulting from cold moist air over the Atlantic combining with the dry warm air of the Desert. But on this day, luck was with us and the fog had lifted just above our flying height and the sun was poking through. After flying at an elevation of about 1,000' above the dunes, the pilot dropped the plane down to sea level as we flew parallel to the massive dunes with the Atlantic Ocean about 100' below us. Heading back over the dunes the pilot banked the small plane at a very sharp angle up and over the dunes. Although the resulting G force nearly made me lose my lunch, I continued to shoot and this was the best of the three I was able to get before the coast disappered behind us. One of the most memorable experiences of my life.

A beautiful sight. I can't really remember seeing a photo like this before. The colours are beautiful and I like the diagonally places shorleline very much. The patterns in the dunes are lovely. The only thing that puzzles me is the scale in this photo. It's hard to judge how big the waves are and how high the dunes are. I guess they are both pretty impressive. Beautiful work anyway!

Really, a very stunning image. My first impression was that this an interesting and new application of the rule of thirds. The line work is very powerful. I really like it.

The play of the lines and the shadows here make the image for me. This is truly a unique perspective and it was pulled off quite effectively.

Great composition for shooting on the fly (pun intended)!! I like the diagonal shore line and the diagonal dune ridge leading to the corner. The lighting is just right too, because there is enough sun to create shadows that show the shape of the land. In the top left and middle dunes it appears like some water actually made it over into the dunes. Was that actually the case? Again fantastic shot.

I agree Gary, this is fantastic. It has such a graphic quality to it. I love the smoothness of the dunes in contrast to the other scenery.

Gary,

Congratulations on a spectacularly unique image! The color, contrast, texture, form... ok, everything about this is phenomenal! And I'm sure this pales in comparison to the experience you had. thanks for including the story. I'm still having a hard time comprehending how you got such a crisp shot from a plane while taking all the G's....
