Misty Morning Dip

Gallery: WildlifePosted May 30, 20072,905 views30 comments
Subject: Female grizzly swimming with 3 cubs during very misty morning.
Location: Khutzeymateen Inlet, BC, Canada
Camera: Nikon D2X
Lens: Nikon 200-400 VR (@ 280 mm)
Exposure: 1/640s at f4; ISO 200. -0.67 stop from matrix metered exposure.

From a morning I'll never forget! Great Bear Rainforest - filled with rain, mist and many great bears. Took this shot from a moving zodiac just as rain was letting up (and handheld with monster lens). Never would have got away with it without image stabilization!

Lots more detail about this specific image (field notes, camera and shooting details, processing details) can be found at the following page on my website:

Looking forward to some feedback - thanks in advance...

Brad

Brad, I was so happy alread with the bear images I got during my three months in Canada (almost over... have to go back home to the Netherlands on the tenth of June), but this is quite a different league again. I've never seen an image like this before and could stare at it for a long time. It's gorgeous! Background, light, setting and the peaceful action of the bears is captivating.

This image confirms my believes that I should explore BC more the next time I come to Canada (hopefully November 2007). Thanks for doing that!

Cheers!

Cool shot. I also like the setting of the image, it is unique.

BTW, with a ss of 1/640 you could have easily made this without IS  .

Wow!!!!
I'm not sure what to say. There is a feeling that we all have or longed to have had with animals or nature. I think this image conveys that feeling perfectly. It is a feeling of intimacy, and awe inspiring at the same time. This is a stunning image, Possibly my favorite bear image ever. Thank you for showing it to us.

I really love this shot. The contrast of the bears against the soft and misty greens in the FG and BG really brings out the bears in the image. Great image!!! :toast:

Beautiful image, Brad.

I like the layers and horizontal lines of both the lake and the background foliage.

Very good eye.
