American Bittern at Sunset

by Jim Fenton

Gallery: AvianPosted February 1, 20071,539 views18 comments
With the sun setting quickly, this beautiful American Bittern finally emerged from the reeds and was stalking some fundulus minnows....in the month of January, when the marsh should have been solidly frozen over up here in Massachusetts.

Image captured at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island:

Nikon D2Xs, Nikon 500 AFSII and Nikon TC14EII.

Great light... wonderfull light! Great pose of a magnificent species. Pictures like this one makes me think seriously about getting a 500 AFS. The performance of this lens with the 1,4X looks very fine.

Hi Jim,

Oh, YEAH! This light is gorgeous, and the bird's in a killer pose too. Sweet shot!

An absolutely world class bittern image. I've seen lesser bittern images on magazine covers. The lifted foot is one of many assets of this image.

Great stuff!! Glamorous light, a hard bird to get out in the open, plenty of nice but non-distracting habitat suggestion, techs just right -- and the capper is that super pose, with the foot raised and the head uptilted.

Great head position - and the light's not bad either.
Did you need a fast shutter speed to stop the movement....
