Coyote aggresive display

This coyote was approaching a elk carcass (mountain lion kill) in the Lamar Canyon of Yellowstone N.P. Two other coyotes were feeding on the carcass and this is a display to force the others off the carcass. It didn't work, one of the other coyotes ran over and kicked this ones a**.

Canon Eos10d, EF600mmF4, Gitzo & Foba, ISO 200, Shade WB.

This is a very cool shot, Dale! Your angle on the subject and the lighting were excellent for capturing and communicating this behavior. So much is seen here... exposed teeth, tucked tail, fur standing on end.

Did you get shots that included the target of this display?

cheers,
ben

Ben,

Sure did and even got the fight. Maybe I'll post one of them soon.

Nice shot Dale, it is a bit centered left to right.
BTW there were 10 coyotes in there this morning and a lot of this activity going on, you had better head back up.

Hey Dale,

You rock, man! :D

I'd like this cropped a tad tighter for display, but the moment carries it .. great shot.

cheers

Carl,

I would agree but I'n always hesitant to crop. I usually just like to show what I got.

Robert,

Congratulations on Pic of the week. Great capture of an excellent display of animal behavior. The raised hair on his back in just amazing.

Robert, very nice behavioural shot. Photographically coyote stands
out nicely from the backgroound.

OMG! we have many here but I never saw such display. They are shy and run away as soon as you try to get near them.

great behavior photo!

wow, what an astonishing shot!

This type of display would have worked fine for me :)) I never saw a coyote looking so scary! Is it a wound on his front leg?
