Stanley, Tasmania, AUSTRALIA
Stanley is a lovely seaside town on the island state of Tasmania. Most photos feature the massif Circular Head (aka 'the nut'). This shot was taken in the opposite direction at a sand bar.
Canon 5D, 17-40mm 4L at 17mm
Cokin ND grad, Gitzo tripod
ISO 100, f13, shutter 5 seconds

Very, very awesome scene, beautiful. I'm sure its the jpeg compression but it does look a tad oversharpened on the sand.

This is REALLY nice. his was a real breath-sucker when it first appears on screen. The semi-circular waterfront and pastel light really does the trick.

Very well done. My eye follows the curve around the waterline and draws me right into the horizon. Beautiful clouds and color. Great job.

The color is nice, but what really makes this is the great composition. The straight diagonal line in the sky and the curve of the sand. And, inspite of those opposing movements, there is a real calm about this photo.

The responses to this beautifully curving calm water shore (at dawn?) are likely to be unanimous in approval which reflects how much in common all our human visual systems are despite minor individual differences and personal preferences. We all have different tastes but smooth curving lines, smoothly graduated hues and tones, lovely pinks, purples, and reds, frame balance at the center and golden two-thirds, are among a number of elements that are rather universal among us in eliciting positive reactions.

The tide has receeded here leaving fine natural lines in the sand perpendicular to the curving water line that wonderfully enhance that curve and provide foreground detail to that center piece of this image. Look at the way those lines evenly darken into the distance at the right. Notice how at the left edge that shore line decreases in visibility to a nearly indiscernable darkness providing a bottomless effect the left edge of the frame. The reasonably even line of the cloud above lowers to the left in the distance providing a mechanism for receeding distance that if horizontal would not be as effective due to the lack of much cloud detail. And that small silhouetted feature right of center grabs ones visual attention providing a sense of great distance that otherwise might be lost if that low distant skyline were even. ...David

Thank you all for your numerous critiques. David I have never had a neuroscientific analysis of my work before! I was lucky to stumble upon this view, it was quite unexpected as I wandered around this lenghty beach. I remember being amazed by the sharp striations in the sand.

Stunning photo and evocative of its title. The orange is pretty bright for tranquility, perhaps; but that is my notably subjective opinion. It's not possible for me to criticize something as beautifully rendered as this scene. Congrats on the EP. :toast:
