Hello everyone! I've finally finished my new calendar and book and I can now live again but I think I've contracted "spring fever"!

Ebony RW45 4x5 Field Camera w/ Rodenstock APO-Sironar-S 180mm lens and Fujichrome Velvia film.

Hi Jerry. Welcome to NPN!

This is a great composition. I love the placement of the fern in the lower right. The path and mist add a little mystery.

My only nit is the green cast.

Nice work!

The green cast is a natural green cast due to the fog, natural light, and new beech/birch leaves. Velvia picks up the green big time! I used only a polarizer for this shot. Back here, in the land of green, this just happens. If you look at the trail you will see that the trail is not green!

I really like this image! The fog, the greenery (and the green cast) sest the mood here - and the trail winding through the frame pulls it all together. Well done!

Very beautiful. I love the softness caused by the fog.

Just for the sake of discussion, here's what I had in mind with the green cast:

Justin,

I've got that shot also! I just loved the way the light changed the fog to the green color. I feel that the image is much more mysterious with the green fog. Maybe I should post the shot without the green fog as well. Again, it was a different lighting situation that caused this and Velvia ran with it!

Greeen! I am green, too, with envy. The fern is placed so well and thus the image becomes totally balanced.

Beautiful composition and nice mood. The green cast doesn't bother me; infact I'd say that it adds to the picture.

Add me to the few that prefer the fog less green. It's a wonderful shot, but to me the green is just too much.

Beautiful. Composition is very nice and the vegetation is beautiful. That's a lot of green - maybe there is a bit too much saturation? I ask because the dirth path looks a little green too. Other than that, this is gorgeous and I'd love a print too!

I hope this doesn’t sound too defensive but it not over saturated in Photoshop! The scan is almost perfectly matched to the original transparency. It could be that you are seeing it differently due to your monitor for my monitors (and system) are ICC profiled. Justin used Photoshop to change (not correct) MY image as HE would like to see it and that’s fine but that doesn’t mean that I over saturated the image. I guess you could say that it is over saturated but that would be only due to the use of Velvia! I would also bet that the 15-second exposure (not including the added time needed for reciprocity failure) added it’s own touch of color since I elected not to use my 5MCC filter and Velvia shifts toward green in long exposures. But, I liked the overall mood and that is what photography is all about is it not? Velvia has the tendency to bias itself toward green and that’s why, for winter shots, I now use Astia 100F. I have a perfect example with an image of Mabry Mill on the Blue Ridge Parkway; the Astia adds a warm true cast to the image while the Velvia image looks great but has a greenish cast. However, in this image, I chose to let the Velvia green be green for my overall impression of this scene. This image represents my vision of the scene and how I felt wile standing along the Appalachian Trail in the fog and mist taking the shot.

For those interested in prints, contact me by e-mail at jerry@jerrygreerphotography.com. Hey Guy, a print exchange sounds great to me, I would love to have your print hanging on my wall, as long as you don’t mind it hanging next to my friend, Todd Caudle’s print  !

Hi Jerry,
I love the moodiness of this image, the green cast works for me. The road led my eye into the photo and the fern provides a compositional anchor.

Absolutely stunning, Jerry. I generally try to exclude paths / HOM in my photos, and I think it's because I could never compose it this well. This composition is just about perfect.

I live near Shenandoah and am familiar with a few photo spots out there, but I'm far less familiar with spots further south on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I intend to head out there in the spring with the 4x5, and would love some tips on where to go and when. I know about Mabry Mill (haven't seen it myself yet, but I intend to photograph that icon at some point), but that's about it. If you have any tips, I'd love to hear them.

Congratulations on the editor's pick. it sure is green though! The only question I would ask is if it matched your experience of being there when you took the shot, if you're happy with that, it all that really matters.
