Castlerigg Circle

Castlerigg stone circle in the English Lake District is actually remarkably difficult to photograph well and is nearly always photographed as a panoramic and quite often in black and white to add drama and mood. Naturally being fickle and Scottish I decided to try out this mellow alternative. Soft lemon light of Autumn painted the grass and distant slopes already turning rusty from the bracken. It was the soft light and decision to include only some of the stones that provides a slightly different perspective on a popular subject.

Pentax 67II, 55-100 zoom, polariser, 0.45ND grad, F22 at 1 sec, Velvia.

Ian, the light and your choice of design make this a beautiful, peaceful scene. Sensational. :toast:

I was wondering at first if it might benefit from a tiny pinch of added contrast, but I don't believe so now. The detail you've captured, Ian, and the light are simply staggering. I feel as if I can place my hand into the monitor and run my fingers across those stones. Superb.

The lighting, crisp detail and colors make this one for me. Well done. Larry

Looks like you made a lot of good choices here Ian. The light and comp are wonderful. Love the BG mountains. And I love how these stones are all on a "bed" of grass. What keeps the rest of the grass short?

I agree about how difficult it is and I have never taken a picture of these stones that I am happy with. I like this picture Ian but I have tried cropping out the sky with my hand because the stones appear 3D against the distant fells. The sky might need a wee bit more contrast to balance the foreground.

To David Bostedo - Baaaaa! Baaa!. I sort of agree with you Bill Miller, however the sky does very much reflect the gentle pastel colouring of the light and the day so in the end i felt it was appropriate to leave as is. I did try a heavier grad at the time but this is most definitely my preference.

I think the soft colors emphasize the lushness of the hills-very nice
