Red Fox

I don't usually post any Fauna photos because I photogragh mostly in my backyard or close by and I don't usually see many wild animals. I was walking down to the river and stumbled upon this fox, asleep on the snow. What makes this remarkable to me is that I have two dogs who are usually always with me, not this day though. There are alot of coyotes around and I'm wondering if the fox is sly enough to use the backyard as a refuge against them.

Anyways , I slowly unpacked my camera waiting for a car to pass along our road, each step timed to the noise of the passing car to mask my presence. I took one photo of the fox laying down , back towards me, and I soon as I did that it lept to it's feet and started to bolt. However, it circled around very quickly and sat down
looking at me, I think, trying to figure out what I was ( I was about 30 feet away, on bended knee with the camera up to my face ) just as soon as I took this frame, it bolted across the yard and dove into the brush.

South Esk NB Canada, Pentax ist-Ds, 70-210mm 75% of frame, handheld.
Thanks, Tim

Thanks for the responses, I feel lucky that I even got one image, I don't know how you guys do it, to be honest. I could have gotten one shot of the fox running I think, but I had mistakenly had the camera on auto focus , with a manual lens and it wouldn't fire right away. Also, the reason I took one of it laying down, was it was starting to stretch and get up, so I figured that might be the only chance I would get, pretty near was.

Tim

Here is the Fox stretching and waking up . . .

Great capture. I've not seen many fox photos, but this is up there with the best of what I've seen. I like the framing provided by the trees in the foreground. That component of your image really adds to the vibe of hiding to see something special.
