Bluethroat

Another one from Nome.  This is from the first day we saw these birds.  I was a fair distance away, so the bird was relatively small in the frame, but I think it works fairly well at this crop.  The bird was shifting positions and I really liked the way this mid-move pose showed off his plumage.

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, tripod with ball head and Sidekick, f/8, 1/1250, iso 640, aperture priority, pattern metering, -2/3 EV.  Processed in LR & PS CC.  Cropped to a 6.8 MP 6x7 vertical.  Taken at 8:53 am on June 8th.

Comments and suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks,

I like how you have composed this image, Dennis. Your got a dynamic pose with the bluethroat looking at you and the lighting is very complementary. While the bird is sharp, I can see some signs of the large crop. It would have been ideal without the branches in front and back of the bird, but then nature doesn't always cooperate with photographers.

Hello Dennis, great you got to make this shot. I had to look up where Nome is, since I've always assumed Bluethroats didn't live in the US. With the field guide and Google maps, now I now different enlightened - thanks for that ! Lovely display of the tail feathers ! The ones we have most here, have a white patch on the breast instead of the red patch shown in your image. Congrats ! Hans

Nice one! These guys gave us a good show.
Really sweet pose, colours, and BG. It's likely not possible, but I'd try to clone out at least the right diagonal branch across the bird.

Nice find Dennis! I like the pose and action, but I do find myself wishing the branches were not in the way. Also, if mine, I might be tempted to selectively bring down the exposure on the bright branches. Still nice work!

Dennis, I like the way this worked out for you. There are some "warts", but then there are always some, aren't there? I like the show of colors, the head turn and yes, the details, even if the crop is large. Lenses and cameras have gotten a lot better over the last ten years! I can remember where a crop of less than 60% of full frame fell apart from the crop.

I assume y'all flew from Anchorage?
