I used my manual focus 600 mm f5.6 for this one at Badlands National Park, South Dakota.  I was having a lot of trouble getting a focus lock on this guy. The dull light brought out the blues in the plumage of this mountain bluebird. K5 IIs 600 mm f5.6 (1/180 sec at f8.0, Iso 320) Levels, crop for comp........................Jim

A difficult place to get autofocus to work well, Jim, so your manual focus lens was a good idea and you certainly nailed it.  Gorgeous detail in this bluebird and the colors came out very well in the dull light.  Excellent.

I normally wouldn't like a shot like this through the grass too much, but his beautiful blues show up nicely here and I think make the image work pretty well Jim.  devil

Hello, Jim, the bird certainly stands out very well from the green grasses, and I love the head turn in this pose. Wish the light, diagonal stem was not where it is, but it was there when you took this shot. All in all a very pleasant alternative from the usual bird-on-a-stick photo ! Cheers, Hans
