On an afternoon visit to the park we saw a Wren landing fairly close to the trails edge. As we continued to watch the bird, we noticed she was bringing food to a nest which was made in the hollow of a cedar tree just a few feet off the main trail. Happy as we were to find this nest it immediately presented problems. With my 500mm and the nest just off the trail I had a bit too much lens. Moving off the trail to adequately frame the scene was problematic because of Park policy. So I knelt down  with the rig on my monopod just at the edge of the path, stopped down on the aperture, and bumped up my ISO to grab as much DOF and speed as I could. In light of all my efforts I still clipped the wren's tail.

If you've read the narrative to this point I thank you for your patience, and for viewing the image.

Excellent detail, Chuck.  Good job figuring out how to get to a decent distance and making the image.  The clipped tail isn't an issue for me with the eye going back and forth between the adult and chicks.

Very nice work on getting this Carolina wren family.  The tail is a minor nit, but the rest of the image is quite good.  The Bg is nice and I like the vertical lines and texture of the cedar. Well done............................Jim

Probably wouldn't have noticed the missing tail without your explanation given the open mouths and the feeding parent.  Excellent detail and well composed.

Very cool!  You were able to document feeding behavior quite nicely.  I really like the composition and I'm not bothered by the missing tip of the tail.  That said, you could always add some canvas at the top and do some very careful cloning.  But I'm fine with it the way it is.

That's really cool Chuck, nice job getting the shot and with the difficult techs.  I am missing the tail but the comp is great with the 2 chicks at the bottom and the adult top left.  devil

Tough condition Chuck.  Great shot in spite of the close cramped quarters.  I love the action here.
