I'm posting this mostly because I was very pleased and a bit surprised at the feather definition I was able to achieve in the epaulet.  This is more due to the angle of the light and possibly some oddity of the individual than skill on my part.  All I had to do was maintain the detail I had in the Raw file.  The nictitating membrane was deployed in this frame, so I stole a clear eye from the following frame.

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 500 mm, camera resting on pipe insulation over car window edge, f/8, 1/640, iso 1600, aperture priority, pattern metering, -2/3 EV.  Processed in LR & PS CC.  Canvas added to the left and top, some burning and cloning of bright areas of the cattail.  Taken at Ridgefield Naional Wildlife Refuge at 6:15 am on May 27th.

Your comments and critiques are highly valued.

Thanks for looking and commenting,

Oh wow, Dennis, this is very good.  You are being a bit modest I think, because it took some skill here too.  I like the pose very much, but very good detail in the black feathers.  Even got fuzz in his beak from the cat tail.  Great shot!

Yes, very nice detail.  I like the background, the open mouth, and the cattail pose.

Very pleasing light on this image.  Processing is superb in that one can see fine detail in the black feathers in the larger image.  The background  works well here and allowing the bird to pop.
