Cape Coral, Florida, not too far from Sanibel,  is known for it's many burrowing owls. There are burrows in every vacant suburban or urban lot, in many parks, and most open fields. The residents love and protect  the owls, and mark the burrows with large wooden crosses, so they are easily seen and not stepped on,  mowed over, or harassed. They are also Federally-protected.

In return, the owls happily use the crosses as perches, so are easily found.
