Canyon Towhee

While I was at Bosque, I did a side trip up to the Very Large Array to see if there were some interesting birds up there.  I didn't find anything in the flats where the array is located, but I stopped at a couple of places on the way back down and found a few nice birds.  This one stayed a bit further than I liked, but it did give me some nice poses.

7Dii, Sigma 150-600 C @ 600 mm, beanbag on car window, f/8, 1/8000, iso 1600 (should have changed it), aperture priority, pattern metering, -1/3 EV.  Processed in LR & PS CC.  Cropped to 5.2 MP from a horizontal original.  Taken at 8:56 am on December 15th.

Your comments and critiques are always appreciated.

Thanks,

Simple, but beautiful.

Nice pose and composition.  I like how the angle of the perch matches that of the towhee.  Detail looks good.  The VLA was an interesting side trip and it was nice to photograph birds other than cranes.

Good work getting the towhee to pose in the open like this.

I drive past the VLA each time I visit Bosque del Apache. I stopped many years ago and enjoyed looking around, especially when I found a Great Horned Owl roosting inside one of the open hangers. I also check the open grasslands around the VLA for pronghorn antelopes which are sometimes there. And on my drive back to Phoenix in December I had what could only be a badger shamble across the road, but it had disappeared by the time I could make a U-turn and get back to the place it had crossed.

Nice find and good work Dennis! In many visits to Bosque, I have still never made that drive...I might have to make that drive next year.
