It was a very stormy evening in western Maine yet somehow the sunset was able to break-through the clouds just at the horizon line.

The star of the show is the great color, which leads to my suggestion that a pano crop would show it off more. The sunset color looks great.

Beautiful fiery red sunset colors. I love how they fade into that dark smoke colored cloud. Too much featureless area in the landscape portion for me. I'd play with some crops and see if you can reduce some of that and a little of the dark top too. but not too much .

Yes! Compositionally, it is much stronger now. And the black does not dominate as it did before. You have better balance between the two intense colors.

I like the repost best. I still find myself wishing for a bit more detail in the dark parts of the image.

The band of intense light along the horizon is very striking, Norma, making it easy to see why to took this. In the larger version there are some subtle colors and textures in the sky that add interest away from the bright colors. The curving ridge line with it trees make an good silhouette. I think cropping this to square, keeping a minimal amount of the land and some dodging of the sky above the brightest clouds would give you an alternate view that would not be a pano. The pano repost does look good.

Norma, the darkness here is actually pretty striking. I agree with others and was going to suggest that there's too much darkness at the bottom and it's not adding anything to the overall impact of that great line of colors.
My thought would be to crop off even more off the bottom, and then consider not cropping the top at all? The fact that you've got some color up top with the blues and grays and so the color gradient from the horizon, all the way up is quite nice.
I do notice in the large view that there is some banding and there may be some compression issues. Hopefully in your original raw file you don't see that.
Simple, yet dramatic and effective.
