Bosque Night Shot
by Allen Brooks
Just returned from a four day workshop with Keith Bauer and Greg Basco in Bosque Del Apache. The workshop was excellent and I learned quite a bit. They covered the gamut of proper use of the camera, setting up for the right shot, and post-processing. They were definitely hands on instructors, always seemed to be available and eager to help and answer questions. Would highly recommend their workshops.
It wasn't just about the birds. We got up early for sunrise shots and stayed late for a night shoot. This photo was taken at the south end of the crane pool. We flashed the car lights on the tree for about a second.

4 commentsI just mentioned in a previous post how I used to "attempt" wildlife photography, visited the refuges, etc. etc., but ultimately ended up focusing on the beauty of the landscape. Actually, the reality of it is that photographing wildlife, and especially birds - is DIFFICULT and requires dedication and time. Photographing rocks and trees is so much easier.
I remember these quiet hours in the dark, waiting for the sunrise and watching the colors emerge in the sky. I get a great sense of that with this image. I'm not a big fan of artificially lit scenes, but this scene at least tells a story for me in those waiting hours before the light comes out and you can begin the quest for wildlife.
I think the pre-dawn colors and light are fitting and work well. I would have preferred to have the lit tree on the right side of the frame. Kinda like when you want to have room in front of animals or bird's eye to look in to the frame.

This is a nice image. It definitely shows the environment and sense of place at the Bosque (at least this specific location). Great that you and Barry pulled this one off!!
Thank you for the nice words about our workshop. It is always fun to lead these adventures and work with fun people!!
