Simpson Reef Rocks & re-post

This image was taken last October at the Simpson Reef Wildlife Viewpoint near Shore Acres S. P. in Oregon.  I had taken few shots of the shoreline using my Big Stopper and noticed the incoming tide swirling around these volcanic rocks that were fairly close in to where I was standing (looking down).   I was pretty frustrated that day with my pics so I don't remember if I actually used the Big Stopper for this photo.  I had been switching to Manual mode when using the filter, but I could have mistakenly forgot to change from Aperture priority.   Either way, I likes the pattern of the incoming tide as it swirled around the rocks.

Paula: My wife and I were there just a few weeks ago; one of our favorite places on the coast. I like this view. I've never worked the reef all that much but this will make me take a second look next time we're there. Well seen and captured. >=))>

Paula - nice bit of seeing here. It's not always easy to visualize how flowing water will look in the final image, but the 5 second exposure created some wonderful patterns here. I'm fine with having a dead center placement of the big rock pile, the flow patterns diagonally on both sides end up providing a nice symmetric composition. I like having the green water in the foreground to provide some color to the scene. But I would consider cropping part of the bottom off, just below those three rocks in the lower left side. That leaves some of the green color, but eliminates some negative space in the lower right corner.

Very cool, almost could be an aerial image of islands or outcroppings.  To create consistency around the frame of the image, I might suggest cropping or cloning out the small rocks on the right side of the frame to keep water surrounding the entire image.  Saturation / vibrance might also be boosted to help the water out and bring out the greens and blues in those areas.  Nice intimate find.

Paula,

I Love this!  Sure, we've all stood on a bluff watched and photographed the surf, but this one is special and you should be proud.

You called it, I love how the receding surf swirls around the fine grouping of boulders.  I think the distance combined with the shutter speed really enhanced the motion of the surf.  The bonus for me are the greens at the bottom and the hint/glimpse in to the tidal pools. The patterns up top are icing on the cake.

I only have one big nit pick - no large view.... :-( but I suppose I'll still have to give this two thumbs up.  Wonderfully seen and captured.

Really nice, Paula.  I could definitely see this cropped from the right, then it’s dang near a perfect coastal abstract.  Well done.

Thanks for all your input!  I've cloned a couple of small rocks from the lower right side and increased saturation and vibrance slightly.

Paula, if full daylight, even at iso 100, I expect you needed your big stopper to get down to a 5 sec shutter speed.  This view shows the swirling around the rocks very well.  I like the change in pattern from the swirling in the middle to the rippled in the top left.  I think some dodging along the bottom to let the colors show better would be a nice improvement.  The repost has a nice bit of extra pop.

This is really nice. Beautifully composed and I like the shutter speed, too. I might clone out the rock right edge middle, but not a big deal either way.
